To Be Or Not To Be?
Though the context is very different from what Hamlet had in mind, that really is the question.
I’ve often had people ask me how they can talk to their own animals. My response is usually, “You already do.” That’s sometimes met with doubt, but it’s true. The problem is that we tend not to trust what we receive, or we expect a conversation with an animal to mimic the way we talk to other humans.
Perhaps humans learned to communicate with words because they forgot how to speak to each other on deeper levels.
The flow of exchange with an animal is often subtle. It rarely comes through as words, and what our animals pick up from us is not usually comprehended as words. For those who do “hear words” from animals, it’s my belief that their minds are just good at translating deeper communication in a way that they can more easily understand what is shared.
Animals read our emotions, see impressions in our thoughts. They share an awareness of the energy we put out, and they absorb it into themselves with understanding.
In order to make our communication a two-way exchange, we can learn to do the same.
The first step in sharing with our pets in that way is to simply Be.
Animals are so good at that. It’s expressed in many different ways. They are very much “in the moment,” or they don’t worry so much about past or future. They are awake in all their senses, observing the world around them. When it comes right down to it, however, non-human animals simply know how to Be.
Being encompasses how they connect to everything around them. They have an innate awareness that they are part of all Life.
Of course, so are we.
If you wish to develop the ability to sense, and trust, communication with your animals, practice the art of Being.
Sit quietly. Choose a spot where you are comfortable, not too hot or too cold, and there are no distractions. Have your animal friends close by, allowing them to choose their own space. Quiet your mind, and focus on your breathing for a moment. Let that focus expand; reach out to your pets and include their energy in your circle of awareness. Then, just Be. Don’t try to hear their thoughts or send them messages. Simply reach out with love and remain aware that they are there, and that you are connected through the very essence of the Universe.
If you try too hard to hear, to feel, to sense, you are putting pressure on the moment. If you sit and quietly enjoy the sensation of Being, you will become aware that you and they are a part of the same energy, the same Life that flows through all of us.
Practice this as often as you have moments of quiet, of peace. You will gradually realize that your animals are as aware of you as you are of them, and you will feel that they, too, are reaching out. You are touching hearts, souls, and minds. It is then that true communication will flow between you at a new level. I say at a new level because it really has been there all along. You are just learning to embrace Being in a way that you will become aware of what’s already there. You will feel, hear, and see that connection. Confidence in what you receive will naturally follow.
To Be truly is the question. Trust that the answer is Yes.

Thank you to everyone who participated in my Summer Solstice special. I appreciate you all so much.
That will be the last time pre-paid three-packs are offered, but I will still be doing individual sessions until my retirement in October 2023. Beyond that, I will honor previously purchased sessions for as long as I’m able to do so. I hope that will be for a very long time.
After my retirement, I intend to continue to publish Creature Thoughts every other month. Let me know if you have animal-related subjects you’d like to read about. I’m always open to suggestions.
