I strongly encourage subscription, as in addition to distributing my monthly newsletter, the email list is also an announcement source. Though I post on Facebook, Twitter, and the website if I’m going to be unavailable for an extended time, or if other emergencies arise, the email list gives me a way to keep in touch with folks who don’t regularly visit other sources of communication.
I do not send out frequent posts, advertisements, or anything remotely related to spam. Promise!
